What is a “Sitter Session” in baby photography?
Everything you need to know about the sitter session in baby photography!
It is no secret that the sitter session is my favourite baby photography session. These sessions take place when your baby is sitting confidently unassisted, hence the name the “Sitter Session”. At this stage babies are so friendly, happy, smiley and curious. You can capture a much wider variety of images when your baby can sit up by them selves. This milestone baby photography session is the session that captures the most smiley images of all the baby photography sessions, along with all the other fun expressions!
Although I always explain to my clients, its not about the age, it is more about the stage! Generally you can expect to book your baby photography “Sitter Session” between six to nine months of age. Every baby is different and develops at different stages. Ideally you want to capture the images when your baby can sit very confidently without any support but not yet crawling. If your baby is still a little unstable while they are sitting, they will spend more time concentrating on balancing and supporting themselves, as a result, they will not be relaxed and smiley during their baby photography sitter session..
Our very popular “Baby’s First Year” baby plan package includes the adorable “Sitter Session”. Parents book this baby photography package and come into the studio for three selected baby Photography sessions during their baby’s first year. The three sessions can be selected from the Newborn session, “Tummy Time” session, “Sitter” Session or “One year old” portrait / Cake Smash session. The “Sitter Session” is one of the baby photography sessions that is always select by clients as part of the baby plan package.
We offer a wide variety of of clothing options in the studio for our little clients to wear during their “Sitter Session”. Along with the outfits for boys, girls and gender neutral, we also have a huge range of headbands to coordinate with the little girl outfits. We also have a selection of hats and bonnets for both girls and boys to wear during their baby photography sitter session. You are of course welcome to bring your own outfit along if you prefer. While we have a wide selection of photography props in the studio, we prefer to keep the sitter session more simple, capturing the priceless expressions that comes at this age! We may use a rug or sit the baby in a bowl or a cute little bed to add texture and add a little interest to the image and help to capture your babies true personality!

When should I book my Baby Photography Session?
There is no wrong time to photograph your baby, it’s so important to get those priceless professional photographs during your babies first year. However I do suggest either doing the “Tummy Time” session (3-5 months of age), the sitter session (6-10 months of age) or the one-year-old session (10-12 months of age)
When will my baby be ready for a “Sitter” Baby Photography Session?
The Sitter Baby Photography Session usually takes place when your baby is around 6-10 months old, depending on their development. All babies develop at different stages during their first year. We do advise our clients to book your session well in advance of this stage to secure a booking. We will schedule in a tentative date before hand and confirm a date for your baby’s session when your baby can sit unsupported. It is important that your baby can confidently sit comfortably supporting their body without any help.
What should my baby wear during their Baby Photography Session?
We have a variety of outfits for both boys and girls to wear during their Baby Photography Session. We also have matching accessories, hats and headbands to match the little outfits.
Can I include my family in my “Sitter” Baby Photography Session?
Of course family can be included, in-fact we encourage the family (Mum, Dad & Siblings) to hop in and have some portraits taken towards the end of the session. The main focus of your session will be primarily on your baby.
What if my baby is crawling before they are sitting?
It’s not a problem at all, this actually happens quite often. The session will just take that little bit longer as your baby will be more active. We may need to pose your baby in a tub or a little bed to keep the in the same place for long enough to get some beautiful images. When babies are crawling… they’re off!
How long will my Baby Photography Session take?
A baby “Sitter” photography sessions usually takes about an hour and a half. If you’re including your family, it can take a little bit longer.
What if I need to reschedule my Baby Photography Session?
We recognise that due to unforeseen circumstances you may need to reschedule your Baby Photography Session. In the event that you do need to reschedule, please call us as soon as possible. Please note that that your session fee is non-refundable but can be transferred to another date.
